2024-10-17 – Community Resilience Planning Workshop

The Green Mimico Community Resilience Workshop on Oct 17, 2024 at 6:30 p.m. EDT got us off to a good start. We had a small but enthusiastic crowd. The highlights are as follows:

Top Priorities

We agreed that these were our top priorities coming out of this initial discussion

  1. Water, flood control plan.

I think that means we should add Infrastructure to our list of “Areas of Interest”.
  2. Tier 3 for all new large buildings in Mimico.

The exact wording here may need to be tweaked. The objective is new buildings should be able to operate without emitting any GHG. Have a look at Toronto Green Standard, where it appears that Toronto Green Standard Version 4 is current, click on Low-Rise Residential Version 4 – City of Toronto which takes you to Buildings Energy & Emissions – City of Toronto which defines tier 1 and tier 2.

If you click on Mid to High-Rise Residential & Non-Residential Version 4 – City of Toronto, then on Buildings Energy, Emissions & Resilience – City of Toronto, you can then click the Operational Emissions section and find a definition for tier 3 – BUT – it is a confusing definition.
  3. Improved transit
    •  Go Train
    •  Streetcar
    •  Busses
    •  New Transit

Action Items

We are looking for volunteers for each of these action items

  1. Reach out to NT residents association
  2. Contact the city about flood mitigation plans for Mimico
  3. Ask TRCA / City to host a consultation about flood management in Mimico
  4. Talk to school boards about installation / assessment of solar panels on the large flat roofs
  5. Submit expenses – Alex
  6. Email minutes – Alex
  7. Create summary web page, update areas of interest on webpage – Alex

Agenda for the Next Meeting

  2. Guest speaker (if it can be arranged) to discuss flooding
  3. Create working groups
